Group Piano FAQs
Q: How long are group lessons? What activities are included?
A: Group lessons are 75 minutes. Students spend time singing and moving to music to develop their core musical ability, learning solos as a group, playing in ensembles (duets, trios), performing for peers, improvising, composing, and working on projects during one-on-one time.
Q: How do you meet individual learning needs in a group lesson?
A: Material is presented in ways that can be practiced differently by different students. In addition, a significant portion of each group lesson is reserved for project time/one-on-one time. Each student gets one-on-one time with me at the piano while the other students work on focused projects.
Q: How many students are in a group?
A: Groups are small, usually with a maximum of 4 students.
Q: Do you have a keyboard lab setup?
A: No. One of the core benefits of group instruction is that students learn by listening to each other play. Even during project time, students are listening to the musical work of their peers who are getting one-on-one time at the piano.
Q: What is the age range for group lessons? Are they just for young children?
A: I offer 75-minute group lessons for elementary, middle school and high school students. Both age and level are considered when grouping students. Approximate groupings by year in school: grades K-3, grades 3-5, grades 5-8, and grades 8-12. I also offer shorter group lessons for Pre-K/K aged students.
